Bio/Company Profile:

Briteseed was born out of the 2011-2012 Northwestern University NUvention: Medical Innovation program, ranked one of the top 10 entrepreneurial programs in the United States by Inc. magazine. Briteseed is dedicated to fostering innovative technologies aimed at improving the healthcare experience.

SafeSnips™ is a forward-thinking technology that puts sense into surgical cutting tools. By integrating blood vessel detection technology with existing surgical cutting tools, SafeSnips can find vessels at risk of uncontrolled bleeding even where tactile feedback is unavailable. By utilizing near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy sensors integrated into the tips of cutting tools, such as energy devices, SafeSnips identify the presence and diameter of blood vessels in the immediate cutting area. The surgeon will be alerted via video monitors currently used in the operating room

Surgeries are inherently dangerous procedures. Regardless of the expertise of the surgeon, a patient who undergoes a surgical procedure is subject to unintended complications that could result in long recovery times, serious injury, or worse. Despite improvements in surgical technique, unintended cuts followed by bleeding remains a significant risk. In the United States alone, up to 32% of all unintended bleeding incidents are fatal. Patients who do survive face long-term complications that include lengthy hospital stays and decreased quality of life. SafeSnips addresses the need for improved patient safety and better surgical outcomes by working to stop accidental cuts before they happen.

The surgeon’s greatest asset is his hands. For centuries, surgeons have relied on the sense of touch to inform each cut made during a procedure. As more and more operations become minimally invasive, the doctor is placed further away from the surgical site. This prevents the surgeon from using sensitive, tactile information to learn about the patient’s anatomy. Instead, surgeons must rely on a 2-dimensional video monitor, experience, and intuition to limit cuts that could lead to unintended bleeding. SafeSnips technology gives surgeons the just in time information they need to make informed decisions. Unintended bleeding has a significant human toll. It also has a substantial impact on the healthcare system as a whole.

Each year, US hospitals spend billions of dollars to heal patients who suffer from unintended bleeding. With a per patient cost of $210,000 and increased patient stays on average of nine days, hospitals need to reduce the incidence of unintended bleeding. These costs are borne by the hospitals themselves. SafeSnips can help hospitals by incorporating cost-effective technology into surgical devices to prevent unintended bleeding, thereby improving surgical outcomes and reducing unreimbursed costs related to patient care.
